My name is Dave Young and I’m the founder and director of Arma Training, a global organization that’s been training police, corrections and military professionals how to stay safe and defend themselves since 1980. I was introduced to Master Lee by my long-time mentor and friend, Gary Klugiewicz, who had worked with him to develop the Verbal Martial Arts Course, which is now being used by hundreds of martial arts schools throughout the world.

Gary suggested that Master Lee invite to me — during one of my regular visits to Milwaukee — to run a morning program for some of his instructors and students.

Once Master Lee saw what I taught, he immediately saw the opportunity to bring my real-world personal safety and defense systems to the traditional martial arts industry.

What Master Lee concluded was that real-world personal safety and self defense training is much different than the defense training traditionally offered by martial arts schools:

It isn’t a sport — with mats, time limits, weight classes, and referees. In the real world, you can’t throw in the towel if things aren’t going well — losing just isn’t an option. In the real world you can’t afford to go 10-2-1.
It isn’t based on tactics and techniques only 20-somethings can perform and that require years of practice in order to become proficient. That’s just not the real-world.
It doesn’t assume any rules of engagement. In the real world there are no rules (except later in court where many encounters end up)

He said that most most martial arts defense training doesn’t consider these realities. It is rarely focused on defending your life, the techniques taught require physical capabilities beyond what’s possessed by most people, and the ever-present legal issues are seldom considered.

As a result, he asked me to do further training of his instructors and students and to be a speaker at a national conference that he helps coordinate each year (KAMA). This in turn led to me providing my programs to several KAMA members throughout the country.

At every school I went, the reaction by the instructors and students was personally overwhelming.

All I was doing was teaching the same street-tested and proven-effective tactics that police, corrections and military professionals had been taught and used for over 30 years — and I was being heaped with praise. School owners actually pleaded with me to bring my systems to the martial arts industry.

Frankly, I was puzzled — why would a martial arts school want enhanced curriculum for personal safety and self-defense???

Initially I shied away from the whole idea. I was plenty busy with my Arma Training business. But, I changed my mind when Grandmaster J.K. Lee pulled me aside and told me the martial arts industry needed what I taught. He saw the difference between traditional and real-world self-defense training.

To be quite honest, I was taken back and humbled — and that night I decided to adapt my programs to the martial arts industry.

I started working on developing a comprehensive curriculum and marketing system based on my training — and designed to perfectly integrate with the operations of any traditional martial arts schools serving families and kids. This program isn’t a replacement for what’s currently taught — it’s an enhancement that makes current teachings effective in the real world.
